The family of a 26-year-old college student who died after being struck by an inattentive driver will receive $900,000 from the insurance company covering the driver.
The college student, Weiqi Wang, was struck by a careless driver of a 2004 Subaru Outback while in a crosswalk on her way to school. Weiqi was a graduate student at Fairleigh Dickinson University at the time of her death.
The police identified the driver as 49-year-old Carlos A. Poole. According to a police statement, “he accident investigation determined that driver inattention was the main contributing factor in the accident.” The police issued a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, careless driving and obstructed view, according to the police report.
The insurance carrier for the driver, USAA, offered Weiqui’s family $900,000 to settle claims arising from the car accident. This summer, Weiqui’s family accepted. According to the family’s attorney, a lawsuit would have been filed if USAA had not offered the car accident settlement.
