According to a research study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers explored whether or not in combination with Aspirin or alone, would lead to better outcomes in treating Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease, a heart disease typically caused by high cholesterol.
The purpose of the study was to compare the impact of that drug in combination with the use of Aspirin. The study found that bleeding risks with are higher among people who have been diagnosed with Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease when compared with using Aspirin alone.
However, the study found that taking that drug in and of itself does not lead to better cardiovascular outcomes for patients. More than 27,000 participants were included in the study.
The researchers looked at the rates of stroke, cardiovascular death or heart attack. Patients who were given both Aspirin and had fewer cardiovascular problems than others in the study.
However, those same patients were 70 percent more likely to sustain major bleeding events. The group that was given alone had approximately the same rate of heart problems but suffered more serious bleeding events, according to the researchers.
