The state-run facility was intended to detain and provide counseling and rehabilitation for juveniles charged with a crime. However, instead of getting help, these young children suffered horrific physical and sexual abuse at the hands of state employees. There have been allegations against over 150 staff members from 1963 to 2018, and in 2021 eleven staff members were arrested.

So far, almost 450 victims have sued the state for the abuse they suffered while detained at the Youth Development Center. The recently launched fund established a claims resolution process as an alternative to litigation.

Compensation For Youth Center Abuse Victims

The $100 million fund offers victims who suffered sexual abuse at the Sununu Youth Services Center compensation of up to $1.5 million each, while victims of physical abuse are eligible for compensation of up to $150,000.

Child abuse is both devastating and infuriating. There aren't many things in this world as awful as the mistreatment of a child, especially when sexual abuse is involved. By holding these monsters accountable for their crimes, we can help create a future where this doesn't happen again.
