Online magazine PetaPixel and photographer Richard Johnson have published a heartbreaking report on young men who experienced gynecomastia, or the development of female breast tissue, after taking Risperdal in their childhood. According to the report, more than 18,000 young men have hit drug maker Johnson & Johnson with legal action after experiencing long-lasting Risperdal side effects. Several of the young men who experienced gynecomastia agreed to share their stories to help the public understand the devastating side effects of the drug.
Photographer Richard Johnson asked the young men to take part in Risperdal Boys.
“This is a story that needs to be seen to be adequately understood,” Johnson told PetaPixel. “One of the main challenges in shooting this series was making the subjects feel comfortable enough to allow a stranger to photograph their sensitive and embarrassing condition.”
Johnson documented the stories of young men living in 10 different cities over the course of a 4,000 mile journey.
The men told heartbreaking stories of the long-lasting side effects of Risperdal, a medication they took as children and preteens.
Some say that they suffered embarrassment and stopped taking off their shirts for gym class or playing sports because of their breast development.
Others say that they wanted to flatten their chests with cardboard or duct tape.
“I tried covering it up with cardboard or tape, but I couldn’t breathe,” one young man told Johnson. “I tried to wrap myself, but it didn’t work.”
The condition was missed in many boys when it first developed because another side effect of Risperdal is weight gain. However, the young men say that when they lose weight, their condition becomes more obvious and embarrassing.
“I had bigger boobs than most of the girls in high school,” another young man told Johnson as a part of the report. “I’d go to the locker room, and people would point and stare. They’d make comments. I would get so angry, I didn’t even know how to express myself.”
The photographer said that he contacted the attorneys who are filing lawsuits against drug makers over the long-lasting Risperdal side effects to get in touch with the young men.
Risperdal manufacturer Johnson & Johnson has been hit with $3 billion in fines over the drug so far.
Risperdal Side Effects
Risperdal was originally approved for treatment of adults with schizophrenia; however, it was approved for use in children in the early 2000s. Long-lasting Risperdal side effects, including the abnormal growth of breast tissue, have been alleged by thousands who took the drug as children.
Researchers have also linked Risperdal to male breast growth. According to recent studies, Risperdal affects the pituitary gland, the area of the brain responsible for hormones.
In addition to stimulating the pituitary gland, Risperdal affects metabolic processes. As a result, males produce prolactin – the hormone responsible for breast development
