Florida Shopping Center Explosion
On Saturday, July 6, 2019, at about 11:30 a.m., there was an apparent gas explosion at The Market on University shopping center in Plantation, Florida. At last count, 23 people were injured. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. And, only one child was injured in the blast which was a miracle given the types of stores damaged in the incident.
During this holiday weekend celebrating freedom, the families of the injured gathered at the scene and watched their loved ones carted off to the hospital. At first, there was no idea of just how bad the injuries were. It was only hours later that authorities confirmed that none of the injuries were life threatening.
First responders believed the blast was caused by a gas explosion, but Fire Deputy Chief for Plantation, Joel Gordon, said they couldn’t confirm the cause as of yet. When the firefighters first arrived at the shopping center, they said people had reported smelling gas. A gas leak was also located at the shopping mall.
The Investigation is Ongoing
As with many tragedies of this sort, there is an ongoing investigation into what caused the explosion. The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as well as the State Fire Marshall and the Florida Public Service Commission’s Division of Engineering.
Three days after the blast, experts still cannot confirm the exact cause of the explosion. While they are leading toward a gas explosion as the cause of the blast, this hasn’t been confirmed. The shopping center has been shut down pending the investigation.
Several Businesses Were Destroyed
Like any other shopping center in America, the shopping center in Plantation, Florida housed all types of stores. Many of these stores would usually cater families, especially children. One store called Code Ninjas typically has dozens of children inside learning how to write code. Thankfully, none of the young clients or code ninjas were in the store at the time of the incident.
Another business that was destroyed was a pediatrician’s office. The doctor said there were no clients in the office at the time of the explosion. Her office was destroyed, sending debris all through the parking lot.
On almost any other day, these stores would’ve been full of happy, smiling shoppers – many of them children. Thankfully, the explosion took place during a holiday weekend and most businesses were closed.
Who Will Be Held Responsible?
One of the things the State Fire Marshall and Chief of Public Safety need to determine is who was responsible for the explosion. As of yet, it’s unclear whether it will be the utility company or the property owner. Until they complete their investigation, they just can’t say.
This will be important for many reasons. Those injured have a right to compensation. Innocent shoppers were hurt. Some of the injuries were quite serious. It’s too early to tell who they may have a claim against. However, once this is determined, the experienced personal injury attorneys at McDonald Worley will be prepared to file suit on behalf of their clients.
Most accidents of these types are caused by negligence. The investigators need to determine which party was at fault. If it was a problem created by the property owner, the injured parties may have a claim against their insurance. If it was the utility company, the matter will become more complex.
