Driver Killed In a Wrong-Way Crash in Las Vegas

A driver was killed in a freeway crash while driving in the wrong way, in Las Vegas. The victim’s blood contained alcohol three times more than the legal limit (0.25 opposed to Nevada’s legal limit of 0.08) when the accident occurred, reported Clark County coroner’s office.

According to authorities, twenty-seven-year-old Ericka Avila was driving in the wrong direction on Interstate near Cheyenne Avenue on November 14. Her vehicle directly crashed another car around 3:30 a.m. The crash caused a chain reaction; several other cars were involved.

The woman died on the scene, and two people, who were in the vehicle that she crashed, were injured. They were taken to the University Medical Center. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

This accident was one of three fatal wrong-way accidents that occurred within three weeks on I-15.

On December 3, authorities confirmed that a thirty-nine-year-old driver died when he directly crashed into an 18-wheeler.

Two days later, two people lost their lives in a similar accident caused by the driver of an Oldsmobile.

The Nevada Department of Transportation implemented a pilot program. The system is located in the northwest Las Vegas Valley, at the U.S. Highway 95 off-ramp at Durango Drive. The system has a camera and an electronic sensor, which will warn drivers who go in the wrong direction on the off-ramp. The system triggers strobe-like signals on wrong-way signs.

So far, the Nevada Highway Patrol informed they dispatched almost four hundred calls for wrong-direction drivers in Southern Nevada.
