Risperdal is a popular antipsychotic medication generated by a section of Johnson & Johnson known as Janssen Pharmaceuticals. It is frequently sold through its generic form of Risperidone and in another form referred to as Invega. The drug blocks the brain’s neurotransmitters including serotonin and dopamine. When it was originally introduced, it was considered a valuable new drug that posed a lot of promise in comparison to other medications. The drug has earned Johnson & Johnson more than $40 billion and still brings in consistent annual earnings. However, the side effects of Risperdal can be serious.
The these side effects should prompt a patient who is afflicted by them to report his or her concerns to doctors. When the drug was originally approved in 1993 by the FDA, it was intended to treat antipsychotic issues such as schizophrenia in adults. But it was approved later to treat adolescent bipolar disorder, and behavior disorders connected to autism, schizophrenia in children.
Severe Side Effects of Risperdal
Many of the side effects of Risperdal however, can be extremely serious. Some of the most common side effects include fatigue, sedation, restlessness, anxiety, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, serious side effects of Risperdal can include gynecomastia or the development of breasts in boys. This can occur in patients as young as four and can lead to significant breast development that can only be reversed with surgery.
It may also lead to some of the other side effects of Risperdal including lactation in young girls, movement disorders such as loss of voluntary movement, inability to manage mouth muscles or drooling, facial ticks or inability to sit still. The side effects of Risperdal have also been associated with death in elderly patients.
Elderly patients with dementia died from cardiac failure, stroke or pneumonia while using Risperdal. As a result of this clear connection, the Food and Drug Administration required that a black box warning be put on the drug.
This is the most serious warning that the FDA can put on medications because of the heavy black border that is intended to be very visible by patients who may be affected.
Numerous studies have also shown that other side effects can include heart problems such as cardia arrhythmia.
A 2009 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine identified that users of antipsychotic atypical drugs such as Risperdal have a sudden and unexpected risk of cardiac death that was twice as high as those patients who were not on Risperdal.
Those patients who have personally experienced the adverse side effects of Risperdal may have stopped their use of the drug but been unable to put the pieces of their life back together. For men who developed gynecomastia, for example, the physical and mental scars can be extremely difficult.
