Risperdal Side Effects Can Be Severe
According to numerous complaints from patients who have received the drug as well as a rising number of lawsuits, Risperdal side effects can be severe and unexpected.
Patients have come forward to initiate lawsuits after arguing that neither they nor their doctors were fully warned about the potential risks of the medication.
Risperdal is an anti-psychotic medication prescribed to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and behavioral problems in children who have autism. It changes the impacts of the chemicals in the brain by rebalancing serotonin and dopamine. This can potentially improve behavior, mood and thinking.
Risperdal, under the FDA approved treatments, can be used to treat adults and teenagers with schizophrenia, if the teenagers are above age 13, in addition to mixed episodes or episodes of mania. However, many patients have come forward to report Risperdal’s severe side effects to their doctors.
Side effects such as gynecomastia, or the development of male breasts, may be alarming if patients were never warned about the problems to begin with. More legal claims against the manufacturer point out the lack of proper warning about severe Risperdal side effects.
Off-Label Uses Common with Risperdal
Risperdal has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States to treat behavioral problems for adults suffering from dementia. This is known as an off-label use and unfortunately, these kinds of prescriptions for off-label uses have increased in recent years.
Risperdal is currently available as a liquid, a pill, and an orally disintegrating tablet. Risperdal can lead to side effects. In particular, it has been known to increase breast size for young men and boys, and it can also cause patients to gain weight.
A 2004 Pediatrics Journal study showed that Risperdal was more effective in decreasing irritability in children with autism when compared with a placebo. However, those children did gain significant weight.
Weight gain can be physically and emotionally difficult for those coping with it, but other side effects might be severe if not noticed and reported to a doctor quickly.
While many of the other Risperdal side effects are not as severe as the development of breasts, also known as gynecomastia, they can be uncomfortable for patients.
These include constipation, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, heartburn, increased appetite, weight gain, restlessness, agitation, anxiety, vision problems and difficulty urinating.
Severe Risperdal Side Effects
The more serious side effects of Risperdal are hives, rash, sweating, muscle stiffness, fever, confusion, irregular pulse, unusual movements of the body or face that cannot be controlled, faintness, difficulty breathing or shuffling walk.
