Explosion at Chemical Plant Rocks Port Neches, Texas

The Port Neches, Texas community was rocked by an enormous chemical explosion at the TPC Group refinery just after 1 a.m. Wednesday 11/27/19. The explosion started a major fire, which continued to burn into Wednesday morning, along with releasing a large chemical plume into the air. Three workers were injured at the facility and homes several miles away suffered property damage, included broken windows, damaged garage doors, and doorknobs being shot across rooms.

Homes within a half-mile of the plant were also evacuated and there are concerns about the air quality in the area as multiple carcinogens, like butadiene and C4, were likely released during the explosion. Other potentially dangerous chemicals could also be formed in the fire, in addition to the formation of fine soot, which can affect the lungs and cause breathing problems, especially for the elderly, young children, or individuals with asthma.
